The U.S.S. Slater

At dock in Albany NY rests THE LAST Destroyer Escort in the United States today! The U.S.S. Slater and her 562 sister ships were built between 1943 and 1945. Being born and served the US Navy proudly during World War II. She took her cruise though the Panama canal in June of 1945 on the way to the Pacific Theatre where she would join Task Unit 33.2.4 in Manila in September of the same year!
*Note: as I am reading the Wiki on the ship to write this beautiful caption, I realized that the story of this ship is NUTS! I began being blown away that out of 563 Destroyer escorts, there is 1 left, 1! then I went through thinking "Umm... how did this one survive?!" turns out, its gets more nuts! Check this out...*
In March of '51 she was transferred to the Hellenic (Greek) Navy by way of The Truman Doctrine and had her name changed to "Aetos" which is Greek for Eagle ('merica). After her identity change her role was one primarily of patrol on the Aegean and Dodecanese waters, where she also passed on her wisdom as a Navy Cadet training vessel until her decommissioning in 1991. That year the country of Greece donated her to the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, who then raised $250,000 to bring her back Home as a museum ship!!!
In 1993 she was towed from Crete to along side her much younger and larger sister the amazing U.S.S. Intrepid in the port of NYC! As her restoration began, her final location of honor would be decided as the State Capitol of New York, Albany.
This is one man who through seeing where she is, then searching where she came from, I have been dumbfounded by how much history lies along the Hudson...
